About Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano

Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano operated for over three decades in Disney’s Hollywood Studios before permanently closing on May 10, 2025, as the area prepares for a Monsters, Inc. reimagining of the Muppets Courtyard district.

The Story

The restaurant’s backstory was part of what made it special. The theming told the tale of a young Sicilian woman who emigrated to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actress. Realizing that cooking was her true passion, she converted an abandoned backlot warehouse into her own trattoria — and Mama Melrose’s was born.

The Space

Brick walls, cozy booths, and hardwood floors set the scene. Overhead vines and hanging cheeses, red-and-white checked curtains, string lights, and walls covered with record albums by legendary Italian singers created a kitschy, warm atmosphere that felt like a neighborhood restaurant tucked improbably inside a theme park. The wood-fired pizza oven sat open to the dining room, filling the air with the aroma of fresh dough and char.

A Hollywood Studios Classic

For many guests, Mama Melrose’s was a dependable mid-tier option — better than the quick-service alternatives, less expensive and easier to book than the Hollywood Brown Derby. Its closure marks the end of an era in Grand Avenue, a neighborhood that continues to evolve as Disney reshapes Hollywood Studios for the next generation.
