How Does the Disney Dining Plan Work? Complete Guide for 2025
Planning your first Disney World vacation can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to dining. With dozens of restaurants, varying prices, and meal options scattered across four theme parks, two water parks, and Disney Springs, figuring out where and how to eat is a challenge in itself. That’s where the Disney Dining Plan comes in—a prepaid meal package designed to simplify your dining experience and potentially save you money.
But how does the Disney Dining Plan work exactly? Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning after the plan’s temporary suspension during the pandemic, understanding the ins and outs of this system will help you make an informed decision about whether it’s right for your family.
What Is the Disney Dining Plan?
The Disney Dining Plan is an optional, prepaid meal package available exclusively to guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels. Think of it as a meal voucher system where you prepay for a set number of meals and snacks per night of your stay, then use those “credits” throughout your vacation to dine at participating restaurants across the resort. To see all participating locations, check out Restaurants on Disney Dining Plan: Complete 2025 List of 221+ Locations.
Who Is Eligible for the Disney Dining Plan?
You must be staying at a Disney-owned resort hotel. This includes Disney Deluxe Resorts, Moderate Resorts, Value Resorts, and Disney Vacation Club properties.
Everyone in your party ages 3 and older must be on the same plan. You cannot pick and choose who gets the Dining Plan.
You must purchase the plan for your entire length of stay. If you’re staying five nights, you buy five nights’ worth of credits.

Understanding How Dining Plan Credits Work
When you check in at your Disney resort, all your meal credits are immediately loaded onto your account. For a deeper dive into meal types and strategies, see Disney Dining Plan Meals: Complete Guide to Table Service, Quick Service & How Credits Work in 2025. For a family of four staying five nights on the standard Dining Plan, you’d receive:
- 20 table-service credits (4 people × 5 nights × 1 table-service meal)
- 20 quick-service credits
- 20 snack credits
- 4 refillable mugs
These credits are pooled for your entire party, meaning you have complete flexibility in how and when you use them.
Credit Rollover and Expiration
Credits roll over from day to day throughout your vacation, giving you tremendous flexibility. However, all credits expire at midnight on your checkout day.
What’s Included in Each Meal Credit
Table-Service Meals Include:
- One entrée from the standard menu
- One dessert for lunch or dinner
- One non-alcoholic beverage or one alcoholic beverage (for guests 21+ with valid ID)
Quick-Service Meals Include:
- One entrée or combo meal
- One non-alcoholic beverage or one alcoholic beverage (for guests 21+)
What’s NOT Included:
Gratuity is not included for table-service meals. Disney will add an automatic 18% gratuity to your bill at table-service restaurants.
Premium restaurant surcharges - Some signature dining locations (like California Grill or Cinderella’s Royal Table) require two table-service credits instead of one. For value analysis of premium restaurants, see Best Restaurants on Disney Dining Plan: Ultimate Value Guide for 2025.
